WATCH: Concerns at Moffat View Old Age Home
Twenty-three units are vacant and there are people who need a place to stay.
Senior citizens at Moffat View Old Age Home have concerns about the place and their safety.
The COURIER met with some of the concerned senior citizens, and among other things they complain about is negligence, safety, empty units and youngster living on the premises.
They say security is a major problem. They feel unsafe as there’s only one unarmed security guard for the whole complex. Last year a man was attacked and killed by an outsider inside the old age home. It was also mentioned that young people who live there pose a threat to seniors.
They alleged the young people have parties in the complex now and then and that these youngsters bring drugs, alcohol and introduce prostitution.
Twenty-three units are vacant and there are people who need a place to stay, some of these units have been vacant for over two years now.
Neo Goba, deputy director of communications and stakeholder manager from the City of Johannesburg Housing Department, said, “Discussions are ongoing with JMPD regarding additional guards. Consideration is also being made to build a wall in place of the perimeter palisade fencing in place as it is vandalised although it had recently been reinforced with barbed wire.
“We have issued notices to illegal tenants. The illegal tenants are to be issued with notices to vacate the units pending advice from the legal department.
“The units are being filled, with five units still vacant. One unit still has the previous tenant’s furniture and some maintenance work to be done by March 30.”
Ward 57 councillor said she sympathises with the elderly at Moffat View Old Age Home and she thinks this home had been neglected for some time.
“The City needs to help our senior citizens. They need proper service delivery. I have also engaged the MMC for Housing on this matter,” she said.
