Pikitup is quelling the fire at the Robinson Landfill site

The Pikitup team is battling the fire at the Robinson.

Landfill site confirmed that 90% of the fire has been extinguished by September 23.

The team has been working around the clock to fight the fire since September 16. The reason for the outbreak of the fire is yet to be established

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi confirmed the progress to extinguish the fire at the northern side of the site.Mkhwanazi said the efforts to put out the fire has been negatively affected by windy conditions and the fact that the fire had been concentrated on the slopes of the landfill site.

“There are no open flames anymore but just smoke that we are currently dealing with. In the southern side of the same sight, the open flames have been dealt with as well. The smoke is still an issue also on that side.

“The team will be working during the holiday and over the weekend to try and extinguish the fire,” he said.

“Pikitup has deployed two 10 cubic-metre trucks, three 15 cubic-metre tipper trucks and two ADT trucks – the latter is the big trucks used in mining projects – as well as water tankers.

“The Johannesburg Emergency Services has also been on board and has provided a further two water tankers. The waste management company apologises unreservedly to residents staying near the affected landfill site for the inconvenience caused and would like to assure residents the fire will be extinguished soon,” he said.
