Job scam victim cries foul
A distraught jobseeker from Sky City has issued a stringent warning to desperate jobseekers following a job scam.
When jobseeker Winile Gamede received a call from a supposed potential employer on June 29, she was convinced she would finally put bread on the table.
While overjoyed about her ‘new job’, her excitement was cut short after discovering that the bogus employer did not even exist.
She fell victim to job scamming after being deceived by an alleged employer who claimed to be looking for an office cleaner at an Alberton facility.
This is after the desperate mother of four, who has been unemployed for more than five years, was asked to pay for a uniform before reporting for duty on the same day.
“Earlier on the day, I received a call from a person claiming to be working for Dr Karyn Davius, who needed a cleaner. However, I was requested to deposit R500 for my uniform. Fortunately, I had only taken down his details but hadn’t yet made the payment,” she said.
When she arrived at the facility, she discovered the bogus employer did not exist, and after efforts to reach them their phone was not answered.
Gamede warned that jobseekers should refrain from making any payments before securing employment.
