Brackendowns SAPS relaunch Victim Friendly Room

Brackendowns SAPS proudly re-opened Victim Friendly Room doors and newly launched Gender-based violence desk.

To re-open the Victim Friendly Room and officially launch the gender-based violence desk, Brackendowns SAPS recently partnered with Sudden Light and the youth from the neighbourhood.

The event took place also as a result of the month-long celebration of women’s rights. The special guests were youngsters from the Thinasonke informal settlement who represented different schools.

Brackendowns SAPS station commander Colonel Munaf Ismail addressed the crowd, stressing the significance of the event and the need for collaboration to make the community a safe space where victims of crime, particularly GBV, feel protected.

Several guest speakers shared their experiences during the relaunch, which included trauma councillors, GBV survivors, trauma volunteers, an advocate from the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, University of Witwatersrand and members of safety companies.

Warrant officer Gerhard Cornelius said that it was fantastic and it is wonderful seeing how the community personnel are willing to stand together against and fight gender-based violence.

Two learners from the Impact Independent School kept the attendees entertained through poetry and music.
