Facebook car scammer sentenced after defrauding Southerner

Money paid however no car received.

A suspect was sentenced to two years imprisonment for an R30 000 fine for a fraud case.

Booysens SAPS communication officer Capt Lorraine van Emmerik said the management thanked Sgt Zanele Mnisi for obtaining a good conviction.

On June 12 at 17:15 the complainant met a person on Facebook saying he is selling cars and the complainant was interested in one. The suspect told the complainant that he would have to deposit money then he would file the car in his name.

The complainant said he made a transfer of R40 000 to the Capitec Bank account given to him. The suspect confirmed he received the money and that he will send paperwork. When the complainant called him again the phone was on voice mail.

The suspect then called the complainant saying he is waiting for their warehouse to release the vehicle.

The complainant decided to open a case against the suspect as he did not get the car. The suspect was arrested and the docket went to court where he was sentenced.
