Maskandi artist attempts gqom and amapiano music
His versatility makes him transcend genres.
The Booysens maskandi artist, Mlethwa Majola, aka M_Square, has ventured into gqom and amapiano music on his latest single, Hlala Phansi, which features Sgu and MC Mxo.
He said, as a musician, you must be versatile and explore different genres.
“I know people know me as a maskandi artist. However, when I hear great tunes in other genres, I’m bound to try out their sound.
“On this single, you will find a mix of gqom and amapiano music. I’m testing the waters with this because I aim to make my fans happy, and I am happy people already love it. Who knows, I might do RnB and gospel music in the future,” he said.
He always pushes the boundaries. Last year, he collaborated with Zambia’s DJ Paradox on his 14-track album, Inqabakayitshelwana. On that collaboration, he said music could do more to unite Africans, but only if they are given the chance.
“Sometimes it doesn’t matter if you understand the lyrics because the beat will carry you through the song,” he said.
Mlethwa won two South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) accolades for best newcomer and best video.
With over eight albums under his belt, he is still going strong because his music has a message for all.
He started in 1998 in a group called Izintombi zikaMajola and went solo in 2010 with the album Siyabakhumbula.
At the SATMAs, he was acknowledged for the most downloaded music. He has done much in his community, including performing, hosting events for children and motivating offenders in prisons.
His music is on all digital music platforms. Contact Majola on 078 133 6428.
