Visionary filmmaker Ayanda Ndimande secures most improved filmmaker title at prestigious event

Ayanda Ndimande, the creative force behind Ayanda Films, triumphs as the most improved filmmaker at the 2023 Eastern Cape Ulibo Youth Film Awards Festival. His impactful short film, Is'Khalo, sheds light on gender-based violence and earned accolades for its unique perspective.

Ayanda Ndimande, the visionary behind Ayanda Films and a resident of Turffontein, recently clinched the prestigious title of the most improved filmmaker at the 2023 Eastern Cape Ulibo Youth Films Awards Festival.

His noteworthy achievement was in the short film category for his impactful production, Is’Khalo, which translates to ‘Men don’t cry’.

The film is aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence, shedding light on the often-overlooked abuse experienced by men in relationships.

Makhosi Musi Tladi conceptualised this project as a call for broader recognition and action, challenging societal norms and aiming for transformative change.

Directed and skillfully produced by Ndimande, Is’Khalo boasts a talented cast including Dave Ngcobo, Solly Nkuna, Sindisa Mtengwane, Tshegofatso Letshwene, Ntando Ncokwana, and Nigel Mpofu. Screen supervision was handled by Dimakatso Mandlazi and Mahlophe Makgetha.

Expressing his excitement, the 35-year-old shared, “This award marks my third achievement in the field, affirming that my skills and experience are continually expanding. It’s immensely rewarding to see my talent acknowledged.”

Ndimande attributes his success to strategic adjustments such as delegation, appointing skilled individuals to specific production duties, and emphasising pre-film screening for critical feedback.

About Is’Khalo,
Ndimande said Is’Khalo delves into the life of a married couple, portraying the challenges faced by a man who, due to unemployment, is perceived as worthless by his wife.

“This perception fuels emotional and physical abuse, ultimately leading him to a point where seeking help from various sources proves futile. Tragically, he succumbs to the weight of his circumstances and takes his own life.

“The film sheds light on a concerning reality where many individuals, particularly men, endure abusive relationships.

“Society often overlooks this issue because the struggles behind closed doors remain unseen. Even reaching out to friends or family for support is met with dismissive responses like ‘be a man’ or ‘take control of your wife’, imposing a harmful expectation that ‘men don’t cry’ or show vulnerability.

“Inspired by the story of Nkosiyethu Joe Fumba, a man who silently suffered abuse like numerous others, this narrative unveils the silent anguish that led to tragic outcomes.

“By courageously presenting these raw, community-based stories, our film aims to highlight the stark realities that often go unnoticed.

“This portrayal has been pivotal in garnering recognition through this award, as it confronts the raw truths of our communities,” said Ndimande.

Navigating challenges
According to Ndimande shooting this film was an incredibly enriching experience, encompassing everything from working with an exceptional cast to managing production and the post-production phases.

“We encountered a significant challenge in securing a suitable filming location that would seamlessly complement the story’s essence. Despite this hurdle, through collaborative efforts with the cast, we managed to overcome it.

“Dave Ngcobo, a member of our cast, graciously offered his home, which turned out to be the perfect setting for our film. His generosity and support were invaluable in ensuring we had an ideal location for our production,” said Ndimande.

Innovative filmmaking
For Ndimande, his approach sets him apart from others who simply conduct auditions and commence shooting.

“I take a unique path by training actors first and then tailoring the script to match each character, thereby enriching the narrative. This methodology has been instrumental in propelling me to my current position.

“Additionally, my directing style stands out because I don multiple perspectives: that of an actor, director, producer, and audience member when approaching a scene. This multifaceted viewpoint allows me to craft more nuanced and impactful storytelling,” said Ndimande.

Fuelling growth
Ndimande emphasised the pivotal role of passion and creativity in shaping his trajectory within the filmmaking industry, traversing various genres to convey narratives to audiences.

“As I reflect on my journey, I recognise that listening is a skill that can be developed, not merely a talent.

“Adhering to directors’ guidance and infusing performances with passion are critical elements that contribute to a production’s success,” Ndimande shared.

Ndimande also offered motivational advice, emphasising self-belief, active engagement in master classes for acting, writing, or relevant skills, and maintaining respect for others while remaining open to continuous learning.

Future ventures
Ndimande underscored that their team is refining the first season of the web series, Kushubile, an engaging narrative unfolding in Turffontein and its surroundings.

“The impact of clinching this award has ignited a passion to organise filming masterclasses, aiming to empower young creatives by providing us with opportunities to hone our skills,” he said.

Ndimande added they are delighted to unveil their upcoming film award ceremony, where they will pay homage to all contributors to their projects, including those from their earlier award-winning endeavours.

“With this being our third award, it marks a moment to express gratitude for the invaluable contributions of everyone involved.

“We extend heartfelt thanks to all our supporters for their steadfast belief in our vision and for rallying behind Is’Khalo, a thought-provoking film penned by Makhosi Musi Tladi, calling for broader recognition and action. Its unique perspective challenges societal norms, aspiring toward transformative change.
