Sheldon Terry fraud case delayed again as bank records disputed in court

Booysens Magistrate Court hears arguments over unverified financial documents; trial date pushed to June 9.

On May 26, The Sheldon Terry fraud case once again came before Magistrate Vele at the Booysens Magistrate Court.

The bank records outline the financial history of the businesses that Terry owned. The State provided the records but were not accepted by the defense.

The defence attorney, Advocate Botha, found that the documents were not in order.

“Your worship, the bank records that my learned colleague and I went through had many other and new documents that should not be part of the records, and also, there is no stamp by the bank to verify them,” said Botha.

State Prosecutor Bikwa explained that there was an electronic stamp on the documents.

“There should be an electronic stamp provided by that bank on the documents, and I would also need to go through the charge sheet and finalise it,” said Bikwa.

The charge sheet and bank records have been the cause for a trial date not being set for a second time in four days.

Magistrate Vele spoke about the need for a trial date to be set and the fact that the case still had to many details to sort out.

“The details regarding documents and bank records must now be sorted out between the State and defence. We were meant to advise on trial readiness,” said Vele.

The defence and State could not come to any agreement in court. They will meet in person to find a way forward and compare documents to prepare for the next appearance.

“We will postpone till June 9 for all documents in this case to be in order,” said Vele.

“I have taken my learned colleague’s cellphone number and will be in contact with him,” said Botha.

The case is once again postponed till June 9.
