9 suspects arrested as Flying Squad recovers firearms and drugs

Police operations conducted between June 5 and 8 led to multiple arrests for robbery, murder, firearm possession, assault and drug-related offences.

Johannesburg Flying Squad members arrested nine suspects and recovered two unlicensed firearms between June 5 and 8.

On June 5 at around 12:15, they were patrolling Kenilworth, at the corner of Turf Club and Main Road in the Booysens policing precinct, when they came across a robbery in progress.

Both suspects were cornered and arrested, and the stolen cellphone was handed back to the complainant. The suspects were detained at Booysens SAPS for common robbery and further investigation.

On the same day at about 14:30, they were assisting Lauduim detectives in tracing a suspect of murder and armed robbery that occurred in the Lauduim policing precinct.

Members proceeded to an address on Abel Road in Berea, where a suspect was found. The suspect was placed under arrest for murder and armed robbery and detained at Hillbrow SAPS for further investigation.

In further policing, on June 6 at around 10:00, members were following up on information about a suspect who owned an unlicensed firearm.

Members proceeded to an address on Dorking Avenue, Dinwiddie, in Germiston, and, upon arrival, found two occupants in the room. Upon searching the room, a 9mm Taurus with numbers filed off and a magazine was recovered.

While searching the premises, members also recovered two ziplock bags containing crystal meth with a street value of R500.

Members proceeded to the second address in Holzgen Street, Brackenhurst and the premises were searched, and a magazine with 17 live rounds of ammunition was recovered.

Both suspects were subsequently placed under arrest and detained at Germiston SAPS for possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of drugs.

On June 7 at around 16:00, the members were busy patrolling around New Doornfontein at the corner of Beit and Joe Slovo Drive. They stopped and searched a Blue Toyota Corolla with four occupants.

Upon searching the vehicle, members recovered a replica 9mm pistol and a knife with blood stains.

While members were busy searching for the suspects, a member of the public approached the members and informed them that the suspects were involved in a business robbery and assault of a victim.

All suspects were subsequently placed under arrest for possession of a replica firearm and assault with grievous bodily harm and detained at Jeppe SAPS for further investigation.

Media Liaison Officer Raymond Sambo said the suspects’ ages range from 20 to 37 years old, and they appeared in different Magistrate’s courts.
