JMPD intensifies by-law enforcement in Crown Mines amid increased oversight

Illegal structures, waste and unlawful utility connections were targeted during recent operations, as officials stress accountability and public oversight.

The JMPD is under renewed public and internal oversight during ongoing by-law enforcement in the Crown Mines and Mondeor areas.

JMPD operates under dual oversight. At the municipal level, the department is overseen by the MMC for Public Safety, Moshe Koma, and also the JMPD chief of police, Patrick Jaca.

In Crown Mines, oversight has been intensified around by-law enforcement, focusing on unauthorised structures and illegal utility connections.

The area has been a focus of high-impact, coordinated operations targeting illegal mining and non-compliance.

JMPD enforced by-laws

• Public roads and miscellaneous: Prohibits washing vehicles on public roads, illegal dumping, and causing public nuisances. It also regulates the height and installation of electrified fencing along roads.

• Public open spaces: Regulates acceptable conduct in city parks, nature reserves, and public squares, while prohibiting littering, pollution, and the erection of unauthorised structures.

• Informal trading: Controls where and how street vendors operate, requiring permits and prohibiting trading in restricted or unsafe zones.

• Public health and air pollution: Manages noise disturbances, illegal dumping of hazardous waste, and excessive smoke or emissions.

• Parking grounds: Enforces parking regulations across municipal-owned parking facilities.

Accountability measures came to the fore on June 5.

JMPD conducted the oversight and enforced by-laws in Crown Mines by removing illegal structures, dumped rubble and waste.

The JMPD vowed to continue regular high-impact, coordinated by-law enforcement and anti-illegal mining operations across Crown Mines and greater Johannesburg.

Officials stressed that public oversight and internal auditing are required to ensure all operations remain lawful.

For residents needing help reporting a specific incident, verifying an officer’s badge number, or contacting the JMPD Anti-Fraud unit, the Internal Affairs hotline 0800 203 712 remains the primary channel, with IPID handling independent criminal investigations.

Residents who wish to report officer misconduct, extortion, or corruption can contact JMPD Internal Affairs on toll-free hotline 0800 203 712.

The unit is based at Wemmer Complex No. 22, Loveday Street, Selby, Johannesburg.
