Sophiatown returns to The Market Theatre

The much-loved South African theatre classic, Sophiatown, will make a return to its original home at the Market Theatre.

After 37 years, the beloved South African theatre classic, Sophiatown, is set to return to its original home at The Market Theatre.

Directed by Aubrey Sekhabi, this dynamic new production features music by The Junction Avenue Theatre Company and promises to captivate audiences once again.

Originally premiering at The Market Theatre, Sophiatown makes a triumphant comeback after a successful run at The South African State Theatre in Pretoria in 2023.

Sekhabi, also the artistic director at The State Theatre, leads a talented cast and creative team for this powerful restaging.

Retaining its essence as a drama with music, Sekhabi emphasizes the rich text of Sophiatown, highlighting its relevance today amidst themes of identity, race relations, and landlessness.

The play transports audiences to the vibrant milieu of 1950s Sophiatown, blending Drum magazine journalism, jazz, literature, and tsotsitaal.

The play is based on the famous drama postulation of “what if?.

Greg Homann, artistic director of The Market Theatre, expresses excitement about welcoming Sophiatown back to its home stage, noting its enduring impact on audiences.

Running from February 27 to March 24, with matinees for schools and weekend performances for the public, Sophiatown promises a theatrical experience filled with history, humour, and musical genres inspired by the defiant residents of the iconic township.
