Thirsty and fed up councillors call for protest after 8-day water crisis
Johannesburg south councillors say that despite their pleas, Joburg Water/Rand Water remains unresponsive to their community's struggles.
Councillors Michael Crichton (Ward 56) and Faeeza Chame (Ward 57) are calling on residents to join a peaceful protest on October 11, following an eight-day water crisis.
The councillors highlighted the severe hardships residents are facing, including school closures, elderly individuals struggling to carry heavy water buckets, and overflowing toilets due to the insufficient number of water trucks.
They also noted that clinics have been forced to close due to the shortage, many families cannot afford to buy water, and the water being distributed is often unclean. Residents have gone days without proper baths or showers.
“Residents are encouraged to bring their own placards, buckets, and other items. Those with transport, please assist those without. Let’s unite for our right to clean water,” the councillors urged.
The protest will begin at 10:00 at South Hills Reservoir, with residents marching to Rand Water to demand immediate action.
