Foundation hosts fourth #LemonAid campaign
It was not about what was on sale but what it represented: a symbol of hope and resistance against despair and desensitisation.
The fourth edition of the Salaam Foundation’s #LemonAid campaign (a twist on the lemonade stall idea) recently took place at various locations around SA, including Johannesburg south areas, Robertsham and Ormonde.
The campaign, launched in 2021, is the foundation’s child-centric response to humanitarian relief, allowing children and adults to pop up in their own spaces and raise funds for humanitarian causes. This year, the proceeds will go towards the #GazaKitchen, a Salaam Foundation campaign.
How the campaign works
Children, helped by adults, are encouraged to find a place in their community where they can sell lemonade or other goodies. Once the campaign ended, the proceeds went to the Salaam Foundation for donation to the #GazaKitchen for use in its daily running.
The #GazaKitchen launched in March as part of the foundation’s Palestine response. The open-air “kitchen” has served thousands of people daily through local volunteers and the continued support of the foundation and its donors by providing much-needed food relief to the people in the north of Gaza.

Almost 20 000 family meals are prepared monthly, providing a lifeline to Palestinians being denied their right to food during the ongoing war.
During previous #LemonAid campaigns, the proceeds went to ambulances and other necessities for Palestinians in Gaza and disaster relief in Madagascar in 2021 and Turkiye after the earthquake in 2023.
Children, supported by their parents, teachers, siblings and guardians, rallied to their #LemonAid stands and popped up all across South Africa. The foundation received the same response this time.
