Power and water disruptions expected at Eikenhof pumping station

Store sufficient water ahead of the outage and plan accordingly.

City Power, Johannesburg Water and Rand Water inform residents of an upcoming emergency power outage scheduled for November 17 from 08:00 to 16:00.

This maintenance work that will be undertaken by City Power is necessary to conduct urgent repairs and maintenance at the Eikenhof substation.

The Eikenhof pumping station, which is powered by electricity from a City Power substation will be affected. The Rand Water facility in Eikenhof supplies some of Joburg Water’s reservoirs, which, in turn, provide water to residents across Johannesburg.

As a result of the emergency work, Rand Water will experience a significant impact on its pumping capacity.

Specifically:

• Rand Water feeders 1, 2, 6, and 7, supplied by transformer 1B, will remain off for the entire duration of the outage.

• Rand Water feeders 3, 4, 5, and 8, supplied by transformer 2B, will be offline for approximately four hours, contingent on successful repairs and inspection work. The loss of pumping capacity will result in water supply interruption across various parts of the city.

• After restoring the power supply, it will take several hours for Rand Water to start pumping water at the normal rate.

The need for emergency maintenance work was triggered by a recent assessment done by City Power, which found defects at the Eikenhof substation, including hot connections on the two transformers that supply power to Rand Water.

To safeguard against potential forced outages and to prevent damage to vital equipment, City Power will be undertaking the immediate removal of a damaged 11kV off-load isolator from Feeder Board 1B for inspection and necessary repairs. This will result in power supply disruption.

The following areas will be affected by the outage:

• Alan Manor

• Naturena

• Comptonville

• Naturena Ext.7

• Kibler Park

• Naturena Ext.19

• Mayfield Park

• Naturena Ext.20

• Rispark A.H.

• Naturena Ext.21

• Naturena Ext.25

The following Johannesburg Water systems will be impacted during the maintenance period:

• Soweto

• Randburg/Roodepoort

• Commando (Brixon, Crosby and Hursthill)

• Lenasia

• Parts of Johannesburg Central (including the Eagles Nest, Crown Gardens, Aeroton, and Alan Manor reservoirs).

The entities sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this maintenance project may cause to the communities.

Rand Water and Johannesburg Water are committed to providing a consistent and reliable water supply, and contingency measures have been taken to ensure minimal interruptions. This emergency work is pivotal in ensuring that the electricity infrastructure remains robust and effective.

Residents are urged to store sufficient water before the outage and plan accordingly. Updates will be communicated through various channels, and we appreciate the public’s cooperation during this service interruption.
