JRA battles vandalism, power outages to keep traffic signals working
Vandalism and power outages have left the Johannesburg Roads Agency facing significant challenges in maintaining traffic signals.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) is working tirelessly to address road safety concerns and respond to emergencies affecting traffic signals across the City of Johannesburg.
Despite its best efforts, the JRA faces significant challenges from rampant vandalism and widespread power outages.
With over 2 000 signalised intersections to maintain, the JRA is struggling to keep up with the backlog of repairs, which presently exceeds R70m. JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi notes that technical faults, power outages, theft, vandalism, and accidents are the primary contributors to the malfunctioning traffic signals.
To address these challenges, the JRA is exploring innovative solutions, including installing remote monitoring systems and partnering with private sector stakeholders to connect the traffic signals to backup power supplies.
Despite these efforts, the JRA remains committed to ensuring road safety and improving service delivery.
