WATCH: No casualties as fire destroys 200 shacks in Selby

The DEMS assessed the situation to help those in need.

A blaze gutted over 200 shacks in Selby on January 27.

EMS firefighters at the Smallen informal settlement in Selby, Johannesburg, managed to contain the blaze.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the blaze broke out at 16:00, destroying the entire settlement.

“The residents were safely evacuated. No casualties have been reported at this moment. The cause of the incident is not yet known. DEMS has been dispatched to assess the situation. Residents are encouraged to practice caution when using electrical and heating appliances,” explained Mulaudzi.

MMC for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso, and Ward 124 Councillor, Mnyameni Mongameli, were on-site to assess the situation where approximately 400 families were displaced due to a devastating fire.

Efforts are underway to collect and verify the data of affected individuals to determine their identities and circumstances.

The City of Johannesburg has announced plans for an urgent meeting with PRASA and Transnet, as the land where the incident occurred is reportedly owned by these entities.
