WATCH: Lucky Lekgwathi celebrates Mandela Day with community outreach at Reuven Retirement Village
Lucky Lekgwathi, renowned Orlando Pirates captain, led a heartfelt initiative at Reuven Retirement Village on Mandela Day, feeding over 100 seniors and promoting community spirit.
The most successful Orlando Pirates captain, Lucky Lekgwathi, organised a community event in collaboration with Southdale Pick n Pay on July 18 to feed the elderly at Reuven Retirement Village.
Lekgwathi’s organisation partnered with several groups, including Southdale Shopping Centre. All involved shared a common goal: to honour Mandela Day through 67 minutes of service.
More than 100 elderly residents were served meals in appreciation for their continued support of the local shopping centre and restaurant.

“When we started this organisation, the main goal was to give back to the people all over South Africa. We have achieved a lot since we began. We’ve donated school shoes, cosmetics, and provided a computer lab in certain areas,” said Lekgwathi.
He added that the residents of the village supported him during his football career, which is why he chose to spend the day with them.
“There are street kids, old age homes and more. Some of these people didn’t watch me when I was a player, but many supported me and know the real me. That’s why I chose to spend my 67 minutes with them,” he said.

During the event, the seniors had their blood pressure tested, joined in light exercise sessions with Accelerate Fitness, and danced to upbeat music that created a joyful atmosphere.
SAPS officials were also present to share important safety tips for staying safe in public spaces.
Cavin Kabi from Southdale Shopping Centre said their goal was to give back to the community that continues to support their businesses.
“We are excited to give back, as this day is all about giving. Nelson Mandela taught us a lot about humanity. He said, ‘Without humanity, one cannot lead society.’ So in order to lead, we must serve,” he said.
Each senior received a care parcel with a selection of useful items and enjoyed some treats during the celebration.
