Community unites to equip children with vital first aid skills
From CPR basics to handling burns, children gained practical skills and the confidence to step up in times of need.
In a strong display of community collaboration, CPF Sector 3 Mondeor, which serves the Kibler Park area, recently hosted a Kids First Aid Training and Awareness Session in partnership with Genesis Christian College.
The initiative aimed to equip children with essential life-saving skills from an early age.
The programme focused on empowering young participants with practical knowledge to help them respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations – whether at home, at school, or within their communities.
The organisers highlighted that introducing first-aid awareness among children is a vital step toward building a safer, more resilient Johannesburg south.

During the interactive session, learners were taught a range of age-appropriate first aid techniques, including basic CPR principles, wound care, emergency contact procedures, managing nosebleeds, responding to fractures, and responding to severe burns.
The hands-on approach encouraged active participation, allowing children to ask questions and practise newly acquired skills under professional guidance.
“This initiative is about confidence and preparedness,” said head of marketing and fundraising for CPF Sector 3 Mondeor Kibler Park, Talya Fernandes De Lima.
“When children understand the basics of first aid, they are better equipped to protect themselves and assist others while waiting for professional medical help.”
Positive impact
The event was supported by several emergency services and community partners, including Netcare 911, Nighthawk Security, EMS Chaplaincy and Trauma Support, Fox Security, VSU Victim Support Sector 1, as well as Compol VE and Compol Patrollers (CP).

Their involvement provided real-world insight and reinforced the importance of collaboration between community safety structures and emergency responders. “Their presence added a real-world perspective to the training and reinforced the importance of cooperation between community safety structures and emergency responders,” added Fernandes De Lima.
Genesis Christian College, together with CPF Sector 3 Mondeor Precinct Kibler Park, also extended an open invitation to children from the broader community, ensuring that the benefits of the programme reached beyond the school and its close community.
Parents and organisers further emphasised the programme’s positive impact. Children left the session not only smiling, but equipped with valuable knowledge, increased confidence, and a sense of empowerment, tools that could one day make a critical difference in an emergency situation.

Community leaders expressed hope that similar initiatives will continue to be rolled out across the south of Johannesburg, reinforcing the belief that every child should have access to basic first aid education and more.
“Teaching children first aid is not just about skills, it’s about responsibility, awareness and the power to help one another when it matters most,” shared Fernandes De Lima.
