La Rochelle SDA Church puts community health first

The Health Expo served as a reminder that preventative healthcare and health education could play an important role in helping people live healthier lives.

The LaRochelle Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church hosted a health expo, bringing free health services, education and wellness information to the surrounding community.

A brighter tomorrow

Held at the La Rochelle SDA Church at 56 6th Street, La Rochelle, the event ran from morning to afternoon and was open to everyone.

The expo was organised by the church’s Health Department under the theme ‘A Healthier You, A Brighter Tomorrow’.

The initiative aimed to encourage community members to take greater responsibility for their health and to understand the importance of preventative healthcare.

Visitors had access to a range of free services, including dental services, Pap smear screening, prostate health screening, HIV testing and vital signs assessments.

Empowering residents

Dental practitioner Khumbulani Mlotshwa was available to provide tooth extractions, while health education focused on nutrition, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.

Community members were also educated about the eight health laws, which promote practical habits for maintaining good health.

Elder Manyathela said the expo was an opportunity for the church to serve the community by making health information and basic services more accessible.

“The health expo was about empowering people to take better care of their health. The church wanted to provide the community with useful information, encourage preventative healthcare and help people make healthier choices,” said Manyathela.

The event also provided healthy snacks to participants, reinforcing the message that good nutrition forms an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
