Great mentors don’t create followers – they create leaders
Luther Vandross' reflections on Roberta Flack offer a powerful reminder that the best leaders don't keep talented people in the background - they challenge them to step into their own potential and purpose.
Watching Luther Vandross speak about his relationship with Roberta Flack reminded me of something we rarely discuss about greatness.
Luther began as a background singer. Yet Roberta didn’t simply appreciate his talent; she challenged it. She saw more in him than he saw in himself. She refused to let him become permanently comfortable behind someone else’s spotlight.
That is what real leadership looks like.
As The NeuroEngineer, I often say that your environment is constantly engineering your brain. The people you spend your life with are shaping your identity, your beliefs, your confidence, and ultimately your future. The question is not whether you’re being influenced. The question is: What are you being engineered to become?
Some relationships train you to stay small. They reward your loyalty but never develop your leadership. They celebrate your service but never cultivate your voice. Before long, you become excellent at helping others fulfil their dreams while quietly abandoning your own.
But the greatest mentors don’t create followers for life.
They create leaders.
They understand that their success is measured not by how long you remain behind them, but by how confidently you step into your own purpose.
Every background singer carries the potential to become a headline act. Every assistant can become a CEO. Every student can become a teacher. Every follower can become a leader.
The role you occupy today should never become the identity you carry tomorrow.
Perhaps the most important question you can ask yourself is this:
Are the people around me preparing me to replace them, or merely expecting me to keep supporting them?
Choose relationships that stretch your thinking, raise your standards, and awaken your potential. The right people won’t just give you an opportunity to stand beside them.
They will prepare you to stand on your own.
