Bassonia and Alberton JKA’s senior instructor is appointed president of SAJKA
In a significant development for South African karate, sensei Bruce Smith (7th dan) was appointed president of SAJKA in March at the AGM.
This prestigious position places him among the elite leaders of the country’s strongest and most respected karate association.
SAJKA is the South African arm of the Japan Karate Association (JKA), formed in 1963 under the visionary leadership of Sensei Stan Schmidt.
His guidance remained at the helm until 2012 when sensei Johan la Grange became the second chief instructor.
Bruce Smith, a member of SAJKA for over 50 years, now joins an esteemed line of leadership that includes the late Johan Roets, former president of SAJKA, Derek Geyer, Ken Wittstock and current influential figures such as Keith Geyer, now based in Australia.
Smith’s appointment underscores both his long-standing commitment to the art of karate and the trust the SAJKA community placed in him.
In his new role, he is expected to build on decades of tradition and excellence, continuing the legacy of robust leadership that has defined SAJKA’s standing as the premier karate association in South Africa.
Together with his wife, Karyn Smith (6th dan), Bruce heads two of the most successful dojos in South Africa. These dojos are based in Johannesburg south – Bassonia JKA in Bassonia and Alberton JKA in Brackenhurst.
These dojos consistently rank among the top in the country, attracting dedicated students and producing high-calibre performers.
A team of highly qualified and professional instructors, each certified in first aid and safeguarding support both dojos.
This commitment to excellence not only reflects the instructors’ expertise in karate but also underscores their dedication to maintaining a safe and supportive training environment for all students.
