Integrated efforts to squeeze truck and car hijackings to zero
He said law-enforcement agencies agreed on devising all mechanisms at their disposal to fight the truck and car hijackings.
The Heidelberg SAPS station commander, Col Phiwe Ndwandwe, arranged for engagements between law enforcement and other stakeholders to discuss the best practices to reduce truck and car hijackings along the N3 freeway from Durban to Johannesburg.
The meeting was held at the weighbridge N3 freeway on March 10.
The involved departments included the N3TC, stakeholders, as well as the Gauteng Provincial Traffic, Lesedi Municipality Traffic, Mpumalanga Provincial Traffic and Free State Traffic.
Ndwandwe outlined the challenges of an increase of truck and car hijackings along the N3 freeway from the De Hoek Plaza until the R550 Kliprivier Bridge.
He further outlined the issue of truck drivers and motorists picking up hitchhikers along the road and indicated the R23, R42 and R550 roads are also hot spots for similar crimes.
According to Heidelberg SAPS spokesperson Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, the purpose of the session was to reach a consensus on mutual working relationships and the improvement of communication among responsible stakeholders for effective and efficient crime-fighting strategies.
