After the classes were fumigated, the learners were allowed back inside.

Gauteng Department of Education confirmed a positive coronavirus case at Hoërskool Die Fakkel on May 18 and promised all necessary protocols were followed.

Some of the parents vowed not to take their children to the school until they were sure it was safe to do so. The learner who has Covid-19 is in quarantine and the rest of the learners are back in classes.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said they are aware of the positive Covid-19 case at the school.

“It was reported to the district on May 18 and also escalated to the health department. Head office officials supported the school. Both head office and district officials visited the school on May 19 for monitoring and support.
“It was indicated that the clinic nurse will visit the school on May 21. The classes the positive learner was accommodated in were sanitised on May 18. The school follows Covid-19 regulations on a daily basis – scanning, sanitising, social distancing and recording of temperatures.
“Employees were made aware that the school cannot close for an isolated case, but the situation will be monitored accordingly,” he said.
