SPCA book pick-up service is not a dumping ground

I cannot comment on this specific case, as the writer does not give details, but often people abuse this collection service as a convenient way to dump items which we are unable to resell.

EDITOR – The purpose of our organisation in collecting unwanted goods is in order to raise much-needed funds.

When people call us to arrange collection, we do explain that the goods should be in resaleable condition but even then our driver sometimes returns with items that are destined for the dump. In the case of books, we do have a recycling bin on site but if it is a large load of books that are not fit to be re-sold, it takes hours to take the books apart and deposit them. This exercise is at the cost of our driver, petrol and the time and resources of volunteers, for very little in return from recycling.

We are always very grateful for and willing to collect items but ask the public not to use us as a dumping ground. I do need to point out to the writer that it is an unfortunate reality that without funds, our organisation would not be able to offer any assistance to abused and abandoned animals at all. The fundraising function of my department is absolutely critical to ensure our continued services. It is therefore my responsibility to ensure that we do so in an efficient and effective way, for the sake of the animals.
