Studying tips
In order to study efficiently, matric learners can use the following tips:
- Make studying timetable– It needs to be realistic and ensure that you stick to it
- Set up a study area– The area should be a quiet place that removes you from distractions and has all the things you need nearby
- Drink your water and enjoy study snacks– It is integral to still drink and eat and not be overcome by studying. Drinking adequate water has been indicated in various studies to improve student’s ability to retain information
- Do not try to multitask- Stay focused on one subject at a time
- Write down your goals- If you see it you can believe it, having your goal nearby will motivate you to remember what you are working towards
- Get enough sleep- It is normal to think the longer you study the better, but the human body requires 7-8 hours of sleep to ensure you wake up rested and ready to take on the exam
The types of studying methods
When studying it is all about finding which method best suits you or that specific subject.
- Recite and repeat- Repeat allowed everything you have written, utilising all your senses until you are confident
- Flashcards- Write a word or formula on one side of the card and on the back the definition. Continue until you know all definitions
- Acronyms- Make up words or phrases to help you remember certain things, eg. SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time specific)
- Mind maps- Draw diagrams to explain concepts and be able to verbally describe the concept and do the diagram
- Recall- Study until you can confidently recall what you learnt in your own words
- Imitate the exam- Test yourself as you would be doing the exam. You can combine this with doing past papers.
- Feynman Technique- This focuses on explaining hard topics in basic plain language.
- Pomodoro Technique- Studying intensely for 25 minutes and then taking a five minute break. This prevents getting burnt out from studying.
