Marimba band keep in tune at international festival
NINGIZIMU Special School marimba band's musicality earned them third place at the international marimba and steelpan festival in Bedfordview on 3 and 4 August.
Ningizimu was the only special school in a field of 50 schools in the festival. They were not strangers to the competition though, having competed in it since 2009, and having claimed third place in 2011 and 2012.
Teacher and music instructor, Sizwe Ngcobo said: “We were not expecting to place in the festival. The band exceeded our expectations and we are proud of them. I thank the parents, school governing body, principal and teachers for their support.”
The pupils do not make use of musical notation, but play by ear. The band’s achievements also include winning first place in the national marimba festival in 2008 and 2009.
