Wildlife Warriors project teaches pupils to help, not harm
On Friday, 25 October, pupils from Isithokoziso Junior Primary School become part of the 1,000 children from the South Durban Basin involved in the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (Crow) interactive environmental education programme, ‘Wildlife Warriors’.
The programme, funded by Sapref, teaches local youths the importance of looking after the environment and how they can become pro-active ambassadors. Crow approached Sapref for funding, when they noticed a discernible upsurge in the number of cases where wild animals were being intentionally harmed by children.
“We had several cases of animals sustaining horrific injuries at the hands of local children, including a baby heron that was almost kicked to death. Thanks to Sapref, these same children are now learning the importance of respecting and actively protecting our wildlife, rather than hurting it,” said Crow’s marketing and communications officer, Paul Hoyte.
While meeting some of Crow’s charges, the children learnt about the important role local wildlife plays in the ecosystem and what steps they should follow if they come across a wild animal in distress.
