Blood stocks critical

Blood stocks have reached a critically low level ahead of the busy festive season, according to South African National Blood Services (SANBS), as they plead with the public to donate blood.

“Collections in the country continue to drop drastically during this festive season, resulting in a daily average of about 1.8 day’s blood available. This is far less than the five day stock required to ensure that the country’s demand for safe and adequate blood is met. SANBS needs to collect 3,000 units of blood a day to meet the country’s demand,” said marketing consultant, Sifiso Khoza.

SANBS appeals to people who are in good health, live a healthy lifestyle, weigh over 50kg, live a sexually safe lifestyle and who are between the ages of 16 and 65, to donate blood. To find your nearest clinic call 0800-119-031 or log onto www.sanbs.org.za, follow them on Twitter, @theSANBS or Facebook, Facebook.com/SANBS.
