UPDATE: Eskom implements load shedding – SCHEDULE

Eskom announced via Twitter that the power emergency was lifted at 10pm on Thursday, 6 March. Power has been restored in all areas.

eTHEKWINI Municipality advises the public that with Eskom having declared a system emergency due to severe shortages of supply on the electrical network, shortly before 9am on Thursday, 6 March, the constraints became untenable and Stage 3 load-shedding was effected.

“What this essentially means is that the City has to reduce its load by more than 450 MW with immediate effect. Residential areas will go out according to the load-shedding schedule, however, this is not sufficient to stabilise the network and the municipality is forced to shut down industrial and commercial areas outside the published load-shedding schedule to accommodate the required 20% reduction.
This is an emergency situation and the supply constraint is beyond our control. Customers in all areas are required to drop as much load as possible and switch off their appliances during the power outage,”said a municipal spokesman.

ESKOM started implementing rotational load shedding from 8am on Thursday, 6 March, according to published load shedding schedules at https://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/ for Eskom customers.

Municipal customers need to contact their municipalities for the correct schedules.

Eskom customers can also contact the customer call centre on 0860-037-566.

In a media release, Eskom called on consumers to switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances throughout the day to further reduce the impact of rotational load shedding.

It is anticipated that load shedding will countinue until 10pm tonight. However, should the power utility receive the necessary savings from customers and the situation improves, it will terminate load shedding earlier. Customers are cautioned to treat all electrical connections as live during this period.

Eskom will provide regular updates on the status of the power system through all media platforms.

It had declared an emergency at 6am on Thursday, 6 March and asked key industrial customers to reduce load by 10%.

As at 10.30am on Thursday morning, the schedule did not reflect any load shedding for Amanzimtoti.
