Media centre donor lauded

Van Riebeeck Park Primary School opened its newly refurbished media centre on Thursday, 10 April.

THE Victor Daites Media Centre was officially opened on Thursday, 10 April at Van Riebeeck Park Primary School on the Bluff.

School librarian, Suzette Wigman appealed to the Victor Daites Foundation for support to refurbish the school’s aged library and facilities. She doggedly persisted with her request and was rewarded in 2013 with a donation of more than R240,000.

The library’s worn carpets, battered computers and insufficient facilities bred little interest from the pupils, who avoided it. After its upgrade, which left the library closed for six months, the pupils now eagerly line up daily for entrance.

The upgrade includes new shelving, carpeting, painting of the walls, the installation of a toilet, security, air conditioning, blinds, books, puzzles, chairs, tables, counters and a whiteboard. Some 20 computers were also donated by Durban’s Jewish community.

Brian Moshal from the Victor Daites Foundation said he was excited to be involved in the project and congratulated the school and especially Mrs Wigman for their work.

“We are grateful to the Victor Daites Foundation for their support and I know our pupils will be eager to learn in such a wonderful environment,” said school principal, Prabha Padayachee .
