Power cable thief hacked to death by angry mob

Cable thief attacked for allegedly causing blackouts.

JUST two months after Durban’s Metro Police canine hero, Khulu and a suspected thief were electrocuted by illegal electrical connections; another death has been associated with cable theft – this time further inland, in Zwelibomvu.

A man, believed to be about 28-years-old was attacked and stabbed to death along Mkhangoma Road on Thursday, 15 May. KwaNdengezi police found his body at about 8.15am. He had suffered injuries to his head and body.

He was allegedly caught cutting and stealing electricity cables by local residents, who blamed him for recent electrical problems in the area. He was beaten, stabbed and hacked to death.

A case of murder was opened by KwaNdengezi police, but no arrest has been made yet. Police appeal to anyone with the information on the murder suspects or who is able to identify the victim to call them on 031-704-7041 or the Crime Stop hotline on 08600-10111.

“We need to emphasize that any form of vigilantism will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be arrested, prosecuted and sent to prison. We urge members of the community to work together with the police and community policing forums by giving them information about criminal activities in their areas, so that criminals can be arrested. No person should take the law into their own hands,” said provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
