Youth dialogue gets youngsters talking about challenges

Steering committee to devise youth programme.

THE South Durban Basin, Area Based Management recently hosted a youth dialogue to discuss and create a foundation to develop programmes and projects to address the challenges faced by the youth.
The pressures felt by the youth are manifested in the high incidence of drug dependence, suicide, teenage pregnancy, crime and violence.
“The aim of the dialogue is to bring youth practitioners from government, non-profit and private sectors together, to discuss the issues facing our youth today and to brainstorm ideas for youth programmes and specific projects that would assist in giving our youth a fighting chance to make a difference in their lives,” said Eurakha Singh, SDB ABM manager.
The themes for the day were building the youth, domestic violence, poor leadership, poverty and crime. Youth facilitators, Heidi De Vries and Tenille Beaunoir, were encouraged by the day’s discussions and were excited that ‘meaningful projects’ would be birthed from the talks.
A steering committee was appointed to devise a South Durban Basin youth programme.
