Community healthcare professionals can now offer the best support possible to their patients, thanks to the release of a brand new book.
Available for sale and available to read online for free, ‘Breast Care’ is the latest title from Bettercare, which makes the latest developments in child, perinatal, HIV and women’s healthcare accessible to healthcare professionals working in challenging circumstances.
The book is by Dr Jenny Edge, a leading breast surgeon at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, and Professor David Woods, a retired neonatologist and the editor-in-chief of the renowned Perinatal Education Programme (PEP). These esteemed professionals have contributed their knowledge to encourage and facilitate continuing education of healthcare workers across South Africa.
“With the rising prevalence of breast cancer across the globe, healthcare professionals must be able to help patients with early detection and care,” said Marie-Louise Rouget of Bettercare.
“In South Africa, under-resourced nurses and doctors are often overwhelmed and under-equipped to assist their patients.”
Dr Edge, a leading breast surgeon at the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town, set out to equip healthcare professionals working on the frontline.
“She’s seen that there are too many patients for specialised doctors to cope with, and many patients are not accurately referred,” said Marie-Louise. “This misuses consultation time and incurs enormous costs for patients who could have been assisted at an earlier stage.”
Nurses equipped to screen patients can streamline referrals and treat simple breast conditions themselves. This allows doctors to focus on serious cases and, ultimately, save more lives.
Dr Edge partnered with Professor David Woods, a retired neonatologist and the editor-in-chief of the renowned Perinatal Education Programme (PEP), to bring out a self-study book that would enable nurses to manage a range of common breast conditions.
Breast Care covers the diagnosis and management of common breast conditions in the concise but thorough Q&A format pioneered by the Perinatal Education Programme. Case studies and quizzes test the reader’s knowledge, and key concept notes pick out critical concepts.
