THE recovery of stolen smartphones and iPads played a pivotal role in the conviction of hijacker, Andile Toto Dlamini in Durban Regional Court on Thursday, 12 June.
Dlamini was part of a five-man team which hijacked a man and two women of a Kia Picanto in South Coast Road near the Merebank railway station at about 8pm on Friday, 28 June last year. The men also made off with personal belongings, including smartphones and iPads. As they were fleeing at high speeds, the men crashed the vehicle. They alighted and fled the accident scene.
The following day, Andile Toto Dlamini, who was in possession of the stolen smartphones was arrested by Montclair SAP. Further investigations linked him to the South Coast Road hijacking.
He made his first appearance in Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 1 July. Montclair SAP W/O Rico Naidoo’s investigation was able to secure the conviction. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
