South’s soul exposed in photo competition

The photographic competition comes to a close.

WITH 250 entries across four categories, the South Durban Basin (SDB) photographic competition captured the ‘soul of the south’ and marks the first step in a prolonged tourism-attracting programme.

Hosted by the SDB Area Based Management (ABM) office in conjunction with Durban Tourism, the official South Durban community tourism organisation (CTO) – Sodurba, Photographic Association of South Africa and Bluff Camera Club, the competition came to a conclusion on Friday, 20 June when the finalists were treated to a cocktail evening at the awards ceremony at one of South Durban’s landmarks, Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve.

From the 25 finalists, the champions of the competition were Jeeva Moodley in the people and smart phone categories, Warren Dick in the nature category and Tammi Harding in the buildings and attractions category. Their winning photographs will be used in tourism products to promote the SDB. “The aim of this project was to capture exquisite visual representations of the Sodurba tourism area and showcase the unique and picturesque features of this area,” SDB ABM acting senior manager, Eurakha Singh.

Event programme director and eThekwini municipality’s senior manager of Imagine Durban, Bongumusa Zondo added: “We need pictures to be able to sell the SDB and we are very grateful that the SDB has taken this initiative. We are also pleased that Sodurba is now fully a constituted CTO, and will support them as Durban Tourism to promote local tourism.”

Sodurba chairman, Harry Etheridge said he is enthusiastic about the future of tourism in the SDB and announced that the photographic competition was first of many to come.
