Special school donation to assist with learning

“We are grateful towards Ashton International College for this kind donation.”

ST Raphael’s Special School in Woodlands received a donation from Ashton International College in Ballito at a handover ceremony at St Raphael’s Special School on Monday, 1 December.

The debutantes and squires at Ashton International College raised funds for various charities and chose to purchase Makaton materials for St Raphael’s Special School. Makaton Vocabulary is an internationally recognised communication programme for people with severe communications and learning difficulties.

It consists of vocabulary hand signs, coupled with visual symbols, which are used together with grammatical speech to facilitate a visual and multimodal approach to communication. St Raphael’s School has implemented Makaton as this communication programme is favourable for learners with autism. This is because their learning style is visual over verbal.
“We are grateful towards Ashton International College for this kind donation,” said St Raphael’s deputy principal, Mrs Philips.
