Training academy’s outreach makes its mark
Elgin aims to improve the lives of local residents.
THE Bluff Road Elgin Training Academy is giving back to the community it serves through outreach programmes, including skills development for women.
The training academy, which took over from Rebooth in 2013, provides local people with engineering skills. These skills have since been used in a practical way to help Fairvale Secondary improve its security.
“Last year, the school approached us about its need to put burglar guards up to safeguard their pupils, staff and equipment. We decided to use the skills at our disposal to help them out,” said Elgin Group media and brand manager, Riaan Oosthuizen.
A three-week work service programme for trainees at Elgin became an opportunity for the pupils to test their skills while building the burglar guards for the school. All the material for the project was provided by Elgin and built by its trainees. The project is expected to be completed by the middle of the year.
In a second outreach programme, which is still in development, Elgin hopes to assist local women aged from 15 to 18-years-old. A propriety and workplace readiness short course is planned for the near future.
The course will be offered for free and will include social skills, beauty, etiquette, interview skills and basic computer skills. For information, call 031-468-2472.
