Literary whizkid fundraises for US trip
The Kidz Lit Quiz is an annual worldwide competition for children from the age of 10 to 13 who enjoy reading.
A MONTCLAIR literature whizz is one of four pupils selected to represent her school in a literature quiz in the United States.
Ezrah Katz represented Manor Gardens Primary School at the quiz at Durban Girls High School on Wednesday, 18 February, where 39 schools took part. “The first round was quite easy. One of my teammates William Humphrey, who is very good, helped us through,” she said.
The Kidz Lit Quiz is an annual worldwide competition for children from the age of 10 to 13 who enjoy reading. The competition is aimed at testing the children’s literary skill. Ezrah will join children from Australia, Canada, China and New Zealand.
The second round of the national competition was held at Roedeen High School in Johannesburg on Saturday, 21 February. Ezrah will now travel to Connecticut, USA to perform in the international event. “It feels very surreal to be going to the US,” she said.
The 12-year-old developed a love for reading in grade three. Her mother Kerry says from the age of nine-months-old, Ezrah could point at primary colours. “Ezrah has always loved reading books,” she said. The grade 7 pupil also plays six instruments which include the recorder, guitar, piano, flute, cello and ukulele.
The literature enthusiast needs to raise R30,000 to cover her travel expenses to the US. A fleamarket is being held at Montclair Recreational hall from 8am to 3pm on Saturday, 14 March to raise funds for her trip.
