UPDATE: Train services halted, roads closed as oil factory fire rages

Motorists are urged to steer clear of the area.

EMERGENCY response officials have converged on South Coast Road in Mobeni to contain the massive fire that has been raging at a cooking oil factory since earlier this morning (Thursday, 26 March).

Black smoke is still billowing hundreds of metres into the air, and the plume was visible from as far afield as Prospecton since about 6.30am.

Those present on the scene include Ethekwini fire department, water and sanitation department, Drizit, Spilltech and representatives of  the Passenger Rail Agency Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

The M1 (Higginson Highway), South Coast and Leicester roads have been completely closed to traffic in Mobeni, and the Sun can confirm that train services passing the factory have also been halted.

Motorists are urged to steer clear of the area.
