Oil skimmed from canals after fire

Teams were deployed to stop the spread of oil into the harbour.

FOLLOWING the fire at the Africa Sun Oils premises in Mobeni yesterday, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has been working to contain the spill in the canals.

This is in addition to the chemical spill management companies that have been contracted by Africa Sun Oils to conduct the mop-up operation.

Booms were placed across the Umhlatuzana canal, containing the oil within the silt canal area next to Bluff Yacht Club, and oil was skimmed from the surface and bio-absorbing agents were used.

“The clean-up team is working as fast as it can and operations will continue until the clean-up is complete to ensure minimum impact to the environment,” said port manager, Moshe Motlohi.

Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife and KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife have been alerted because of the potential harm to marine and bird life and eThekwini Municipality was called in to measure dissolved oxygen levels in the harbour.
