WITH only 2.8 days of blood in stock nationally, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is urging all eligible people to donate.
With almost 40* of blood collected through schools and universities, the SANBS has been experiencing difficulties with blood collections due to the holidays.
“The SANBS needs to maintain a stock level of five days at all times by collecting 3,000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival,” said SANBS communications manager, Vanessa Raju.
Donors must weigh at least 50kg, be 16 to 65-years-old, lead a sexually-safe lifestyle and be in general good health.
For information on becoming a donor and where to donate call 080-011-9031, email customerservice@sanbs.org.za or visit www.sanbs.org.za.
