THE Durban Regional Court sentenced a 19-year-old man to five years’ imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for possession of unlicensed ammunition.

Police spokesperson in Wentworth Captain Mbuso said both sentences will run concurrently. The accused was arrested during routine police patrols in Wentworth in December 2024.

“The members of the Crime Prevention Unit were on routine patrols in Wentworth when they noticed a suspicious man wearing a hoodie. He was found in possession of a firearm and live ammunition. He was taken to the police station for further investigation,” said Gumede.

The case docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Buyi Cynthia Mnguni to investigate.

“Mnguni collected all the evidence, and brought the docket before court. She displayed her investigative skills and knowledge to ensure that the accused was sentenced. The station commander Colonel Sinayo Mtshali and the management of the station applauded Mnguni for her recent conviction,” he said.

Gumede added that the recent sentence will send a strong message to perpetrators that are carrying any unlicensed firearms in public that it is a contravention of the Firearms Control Act.
