Welding bursaries on offer
A welding business is offering bursary opportunties to unskilled locals.
A JACOBS based welding school in Jacobs is offering 25 welding bursaries to locals from underprivileged backgrounds.
Kim’s Welding School, which is affiliated to Fabricon, will provide the bursaries to candidates aged 18 to 22-years-old with no experience in the field, with the aim of giving back to the community and increasing the pool of skilled labour in the field.
“Coming from the area, I have seen that there are not enough opportunities for disadvantaged people, which means the poverty cycle continues. By provided a solution to the skills shortage in the country through this programme, we are also broadening our database,” said CEO, Selwin Swartz.
Successful applicants, of which at least 30% will be women, will go through a programme which includes on-site training, after which they will be skilled to take on assistant or semi-skilled work. The school is looking for people from South Durban and Heidelberg and the top five learners who complete the training will be entered into the 2016 SA Young Welder of the Year competition hosted by the Southern African Institute of Welding.
Practical instructor, Malcolm Hendricks, who has been in the industry for over 25 years said the Merseta-accredited training will give applicants practical experience as well as mentoring to allow them to succeed. Applications must be in by Friday, 17 April. For information on how to apply, call Kim’s Welding School on 031-461-4462.
