Don’t buy stolen goods

Police urge community members to help put a stop to the trade in stolen goods.

THE media monitoring office of Brighton Beach SAPS calls for the community to reject the sale of stolen goods as a way of reducing crime.

Through a brochure campaign started on Thursday, 30 April, the officers spoke about community involvement by reporting people involved in buying or selling stolen items.

“When a market is created for stolen items, the demand increases, resulting in property related crimes being generated. There is a responsibility on us all to report those who sell, purchase and trade in stolen items including copper cable and non-ferrous metals. The purchase and sale of stolen items is a criminal offence in terms of the Second Hand Goods Act, 6 of 2009,” said communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

She urges community members to reject offers to buy stolen items and report offenders anonymously by SMSing to 32211, visiting www.crimeline.co.za or calling the Crime Stop hotline on 08600-10111, Telkom crime line on 080-012-4000, Eskom crime line on 0800-112-722, Transnet Freight Rail on 080-000-3056 or eThekwini call centre on 080-033-1011.
