Police appeal for information after Merebank temple robbery

The victims were robbed at gunpoint as the suspects made off with four cellphones valued at R42 600.

POLICE have appealed to the public who might have information about a recent robbery at a temple in Merebank to come forward as the investigation continues.

The victims were inside the temple when the suspects stormed the place of worship and demanded valuables.

According to the police spokesperson in Wentworth, Captain Mbuso Gumede, the suspects were all armed with pistols.

“The victims were robbed at gunpoint while conducting a prayer session. Four cellphones with a total value of R 42 600 were stolen. An amount of R100 was also taken,” he said.

Gumede said the Wentworth detectives are investigating a case of armed robbery.

“The station commander, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali and station Vispol Commander Lieutenant Colonel Cheryl Pillay have communicated with the spiritual crime prevention leaders to assist the community in Merewent zones to be vigilant, and always assists with street neighborhood watch, as well as mobilising E2 patrollers to intervene and step in with more patrols,” said Gumede.

He added that the Crime Prevention Unit and Wentworth Vispol members will intensify their daily patrols and during night hours.
