At about 10am on Monday, 18 May Montclair SAPS were called in to calm the unrest at the Coastal College campus.
Students were unhappy about the decrease in student funds for accommodation and transport. President of the SRC, Sanele Ndlovu joined fellow students in the protest. “We are protesting against the national student fund. There are also engineering students who don’t have their results,” he said. Electrical engineering student Malinda Ndadana says she needs the student transport allowance because she still lives at home. “I want a transport allowance. We will not stop protesting until we get what we want,” she said.
Attempts to contact the Swinton Road campus and the KwaMakhutha-based central administration office of Coastal College for comment on Monday, 18 May, proved unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
