Montclair CPF harnesses social media

IN an effort to get residents in Montclair affiliated with various social media groups, Montclair Community Policing Forum has released information for members of the public to join.

Montclair CPF PRO Julie Meyer explains the social media groups:

MONTCLAIR community crime prevention MCCP is the official Montclair CPF Whatsapp group name and everyone in the Montclair SAPS policing area are welcome to join. contact Julie on 083-534-1668 and she will gladly add you to the group.

The second group of the Montclair CPF is named MCCP PATROL. These are the same people from Kombat Community Safety Project, the name and signage change was due to CPF requirements.
This special group of community member give up their time for free to do high visibility patrols in and around the Montclair SAPS policing area, which include but are not limited to Montclair, Woodlands, Woodhaven and Yellowwood Park areas.Their vehicles will have the official MCCP signage.
They are a friendly bunch and can be found fairly easily when not patrolling the area, generally parked on a big grassed area. If anyone feels like a chat to see what they are up to, you are more than welcome to stop to chat with them.

These community members of the CPF work hand-in-hand with SAPS and all security companies. The MCCP Patrol group is not affiliated to any one single security company; the only organisation the MCCP is affiliated to is the Montclair SAPS.

Some of MCCP members have specific roles:
“Dean Saunders is our road captain. He lets our group know where and when we will meet and assigns areas to patrol. Julia besides being the CPF PRO, is the comic relief when things get heated. Steve is our car expert. Dennis and Dawn look after all of us with sound advice. There are numerous other people who make this group work; they all play an important role in helping to keep the community safe,” said Meyer.

“Next time you see a couple of cars or bakkies driving slowly through the neighbourhood and they have the MCCP signage on them, be patient with them, as they are there to help keep us all safe. When you are all warm and safe in bed in the early hours of the mornings, they are the ones out there helping to keep our area’s crime rate down. Give them a wave the next time you drive past them- they really appreciate the gesture,” she said.

“Because of the effectiveness of this group crime in the night hours has diminished in our area, the crime stats show that the majority of crime is now committed during the day, SAPS have asked that the community be aware of this and to take the necessary precautions. Both SAPS and the CPF are now looking for any community members who wish to participate in the community patrols during the day to please contact the CPF PRO Julie Meyer on 083-534-1668. “The more visible we are, the less likely criminals want to take a chance to commit crime,” said Meyer.
