Soldiers saluted at medal parade [PHOTOS]

To all the recipients, a very big congratulations on a job well done.

DESERVING military recipients were celebrated at a KZN Signal Unit medal parade on Thursday, 9 July at the Bluff Army Base.

General Officer Commanding of the South African Army Signal Formation, Brigadier General Leon Eggers bestowed honours on military members who performed duties during the memorial service and funeral of Nelson Mandela and those who have long served in the South African National Defence Force.

Mandela medal recipients were Captain Mashabela, Staff Sergeant Bango, Sergeants Khuzwayo, Ngubane and Mbatha and Corporals Duma, Kwele, Mkhungo, Kock and Nxele.

Long-serving members were Capt Majozi, who received a 10-year medal and Senior Warrant Officer Benjamin, SSgt Kruger and Cpl Dlamini who each received 20-year medals. The Tshumelo Ikatelaho general service medal was awarded to Lance Corporal Mthembu.

“Congratulations to all the members who have received operational and long service medals. Our primary goal is the support of operations and to honour people with medals is great,” said Brig-Gen Eggers in his speech commending the recipients.

“We are soldiers and we serve our beloved country wherever we are needed. To all the recipients, a very big congratulations on a job well done.

A special word of thanks goes to the families of the recipients. The families are the pillars of strength for any soldier,” he added.
