Beware abuse, hazard of social media

Dr Emser’s workshop provides enlightenment as to the evils which are harboured within what has become an increasingly favoured medium of communication.

EDITOR – On 18 July, the Brighton Beach CPF hosted a workshop on the abuse and hazards of social networks, directed by Dr Monique Emser.

Using numerous examples, she illustrated the very real threats posed by chat rooms and other aspects of the social media and the extent to which our youth are vulnerable to those who abuse such media in order to promote paedophilia, pornography, prostitution and human trafficking.

The extent to which users of chat rooms and the array of network options are exposed to those who have deviant designs should

strike fear in the minds of parents. Yet the evidence that access to photographic and personal information is within easy grasp of those of wayward intent is undeniable. Indeed, anyone using the internet leaves a footprint that is indelible.

Dr Emser’s workshop provides enlightenment as to the evils which are harboured within what has become an increasingly favoured medium of communication. She also provides ways of monitoring and even blocking sites and suggests measures for assisting those who have become addicted to this onslaught on morals and personal safety.

Dr Emser’s workshop is for both parents and the youth. I appeal to churches, youth and outreach groups to avail themselves of this critically important service to our community. Dr Emser may be reached via email at monique.emser@gmail.com
