Soldiers share time, donations with children’s home

THE spirit of Mandela Day continued on Friday, 31 July as members of the Army Support Base KZN spent more than 67 minutes with the children of Isaiah 54 on the Bluff.

Communications officer, Captain Nhlumayo led the group of more than 20 army officers as they delivered boxes of food and clothing donated by the members themselves.

They then spent the morning interacting with the children and staff of the children’s home.

“Soldiers are known to carry a heavy task – the protection of our country. We take care of you and it is our duty to lay down our lives to ensure citizens of South Africa are safe, but we must also interact with the locals in our communities and see what we can do to empower them and better their lives,” said Capt Nhlumayo.

Isaiah 54 was founded 28 years ago by Glynnis Dauth as a home for abandoned, abused or HIV babies. Dauth said since she started the organisation, more than 700 children have come through its doors.

“Thank you for what you blessed us with. On behalf of everybody at Isaiah 54, we appreciate it,” said Dauth.

The team from the Army Support Base KZN plans to continue its outreach in the community to other places in need, having already helped a children’s home in Chatsworth.

“I salute them and their efforts in donating to this cause. I am proud of what we have achieved and what we will continue to do,” said Capt Nhlumayo.
